In a Vanadir cave, Stergen, Francis, Pip, and friends have whittled down the Zecharrim soldiers who were lying in ambush for them. Now the Strangers and company must contend with the remainder and then find the portal that Darian thinks churns somewhere within the cave. If they can, they hope to find a way to destroy or disable the gateway and stop the flood of monstrous troops into the East March.

Then, maybe, they can determine why the Demonlich sent his Zecharrim into southern Calize in the first place.
